Guidelines for submissions
Markings welcomes unsolicited submissions of poetry, short stories, articles of cultural interest and analysis, play script excerpts, artwork.
Poetry: no more than six poems at a time. Pages numbered where more than one page is used for a single work. Each sheet to carry name and address of writer.
Short Stories: No more than two at a time, word guide – around 3000 is usually the maximum number of words but longer stories have appeared. Pages should be numbered and each sheet to carry name and address of writer.
Articles of cultural interest and analysis on literature, music, song, the visual arts and theatre. Individual pieces only, word guide – around 3000 is usually the maximum number of words but longer articles have appeared. Pages should be numbered and each sheet to carry name and address of writer.
Play script excerpts (or complete mini dramas). Maximum 2000 words. Excerpts should be selfcontained or readily explicable through brief notes. Pages should be numbered and each sheet to carry name and address of writer.
Artwork. Black and white or greyscale artwork is published. There are usually two features in each issue carrying 10 to fifteen images per feature. Sequences or thematically/visually related material is preferred but not necessary. Artists should bear in mind the scale and portrait format of the page. A biographical note, contact details and any commentary should accompany the submission. A colour
image taken from a feature may be used for the front cover of the magazine and artists are at liberty to suggest and send a suitable colour image.
File formats
Written word: Word (.doc & docx) & rtf. Use standard fonts and minimal formatting.
Artwork: jpeg format, minimum 200 dpi. To avoid large files, images should be scaled to be no more than the width of a page (600mm).

All electronic submissions will be acknowledged on receipt. Paper submissions will be answered within 6 months of receipt.
Copyright remains with the author(s). Payment is made for commissioned pieces.
Markings is positively venerable in comparison with most similar ventures; long may it flourish.
